Understanding the Real Reasons Behind Addiction and Escape

Updated: Jul 28

It's Rarely About the Alcohol

When people hear the word addiction, they often think of alcohol or drugs.

But addiction wears many disguises.

Food. Work. Exercise. Shopping. Relationships. Social media. Gambling (Insert your coping mechanism here)

Because it is rarely about the substance or the behaviour itself. More often, it is an attempt to change the way we feel.

To numb.

To escape.

To distract.

To soothe.

To survive.

Many women reach a stage in life where the strategies that once helped them cope no longer seem to work.

Menopause can bring emotions to the surface that have been buried for years. Relationship breakdowns, grief, burnout, childhood trauma, caring for others, losing parents, changing identities and the pressures of modern life can all leave us searching for relief.

Sometimes it is one thing. More often, it is a mixture of many things.

There are many ways to skin a cat, as the saying goes, but not every approach gets to the root of the problem.

Fighting ourselves rarely works.

Shaming ourselves rarely works.

Willpower alone rarely works.

Because beneath the behaviour is usually a woman who has spent years doing her best with the tools she had at the time.

Recovery is not about becoming perfect.

It is also not about punishment.

And it is not about being broken.

It is about understanding.

It is about compassion.

And ultimately, it is about coming back to the present.

Back to your body.

Back to your breath.

Back to your values.

Back to yourself.

Because healing does not happen in yesterday’s regrets or tomorrow’s fears.

It happens here.

In the present moment.

And perhaps that is where freedom begins.

At Rebel Alma, I believe recovery is about far more than simply removing a substance or changing a behaviour. It is about reconnecting with yourself, understanding what lies beneath and creating a life that no longer requires constant escape.

Progress over perfection. One day at a time. One breath at a time. Back to the Present.
